Communicate effectively in writing, orally, and in using information technologies
Good communication skills and practices are essential in an profession. Because of the volume of information involved, library science is no exception.
There are many forms of communication. Librarians interact with patrons every day in a variety of ways. In-person reference work requires excellent verbal and non-verbal communication with patrons. Electronic reference service, which is gaining in popularity in academic libraries, requires excellent written communication skills.
In my classes for the MLS degree, I communicated frequently with my fellow students in a variety of ways: in-person, over the phone, and electronically; and for a variety of reasons: casual interaction, putting together a presentation, and making a presentation. The following documents demonstrate examples of communication from my MLS classes.
Artifacts that demonstrate this outcome:
LI 804 Theory of Organization of Information
When our group was assigned the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set to explain to the class, I knew virtually nothing about it. However, by the end of the assignment, I felt we had a presentation I was proud of, and that communicated Dublin Core in a way that was easy to understand.

LI 842 Indexing and Abstracting
For an abstracting excercise, we were partnered, and told to each write our own abstract of an identical article, then compare the two versions, and present a combined best abstract to the rest of the class. This assignment not only was an excellent excercise in communication with a colleague, it also made us think about how different people interpret information and choose to communicate it.

One of the most essential forms of communication for a library to have is publicity. After I had developed a wiki for the Newman Division of Nursing Library, I needed to publicize it. One of the ways I chose to promote the wiki was through flyers posted in the library and other places around the nursing school
